Girls of Summer: The Top Influencers Take Vacation Style on the Road

Summer travel season is getting closer and I am so ready to hit the road - or the airport, and I plan to do it with this year’s easy (read: comfortable) looks.  I have been looking at some of the world’s most seasoned style influencers for inspiration and the packing has begun.  My travels this year will go from city, to countryside, to beach so I have to be efficient in the packing department.  I am so looking forward to all-day walks in Europe wearing cushy sneakers and sport sandals rather than flats that look amazing but can’t stand up to marathon site-seeing.  I’ll save slip on sandals and heels for evenings.  On the subject of comfort, what could be easier to wear, and pack, than a light floaty dress that can be worn day or night depending on how I accessorize? This summer’s versatile option for daytime is a great pair of shorts that are causal but still dressed-up at the same time.  I’m bringing pieces in citrus brights, neutrals for an easy chic look, separates that can be mixed and matched, and airy items in light-weight fabrics that float and flutter.  A floral sundress, graphic t-shirt, and a mini with lace accents will be on constant rotation. I’ll round it all out with accessories that finish off my look while being useful at the same time:  scarves to wear in my hair or tie to my bag for a glam touch, barrettes to add some bling to my hair, a packable sunhat, statement sunglasses, ankle-tie espadrilles and a straw or rattan bag for a “French girl on the Riviera” vibe.  Here is my summer travel mood board to inspire your own outfits.  Wherever you roam, do it is style.

Heatwave Style - Mid-Summer Shopping

Mid-summer is one of my favorite times to go shopping. There are great deals as spring and summer styles are on sale, and pre-fall items help transition lighter pieces into outfits I can wear throughout the cooler months ahead.  And I love finding something on sale that I can wear right away that I can mix up with my usual looks.

Hothouse florals by Reformation

Boho Mini dresses by Freepeople

Living in the desert means I know a thing or two about heatwaves and how to dress fashionably without suffocating.  Floaty, boho mini dresses that reveal a lot of leg are my go-to favorites year round, and this year I am adding a midi skirt with a bustier top with spaghetti straps.  White jeans with frayed hems that bare the ankles are super comfortable and have hippie-chic Riviera style when worn with everything from tank tops, to embroidered blouses to graphic tees.

Elizabeth Cole "Hamsa" earrings and Isabel Marant "Collier Scarabe charm necklace" both at ShopBop

Jewelry pieces that feel like little treasures picked up on an exotic vacation make a statement with any outfit, including super simple jeans and t-shirts.  Gold looks great against bare skin in summer.  I love woven bags and look for details that channel a seventies vibe.  Bucket totes with fishnet weaving look chic with just about any summer outfit and this rainbow palm trees tote is all “California dreaming”.

Skipping Girl palm tree tote and Staud "Moreau Bag" both at ShopBop

Schutz "Elsa" fringed slides, and Steven "Greece" slides both at ShopBop

Slides are all the rage this summer but I am saving the beach and platform slip-ons for sportier days.  I love a statement slide that lengthens the leg and looks great with everything from jeans to mini dresses.  I am loving this yellow fringed pair with a small heel for a glam look, and rose gold flats will look amazing against my fake-tan body glow.

Summer means bouncing from the steamy outdoors to the frigid A/C so having something chic to put over your shoulders makes sense. I love this asian-inspired kimono as it is light and airy but still has that exotic look that just feels so right at this time of year.

Long live these long summer days! Fall will be here too soon and layers will be piled on and it will be goodbye limbs. I’m going to savor every moment of these warm summer days, heatwaves and all.

Celebrating Independence Day with STYLE

This week’s Independence Day celebrations are getting under way and I have been making plans that will include some pool time, chilling with friends, great food, and FUN despite the forecasted heatwave.   I may never get out of the pool so please keep the ice cream coming, and any frosty beverage with an umbrella won’t be ignored either.

I have been shopping for the perfect pieces to show off my patriotic spirit with red, white and blue in all-American style classics in denim, cottons, aviators, and sneakers.  There are tons of choices this year and these pieces will be my go-to favorites for the rest of the summer.

Skinny sunglasses are everywhere but just take a look at the supermodels and celebrities who have already moved on to sporty shield sunglasses and these Versace aviators in blue will keep me a major step ahead of the pack right into fall.  The gorgeous beach tote from Yosuzi will be my constant companion all summer, from vacation, to shopping, to the gym - loving the pompoms and fringed handles.  These Nike sneakers with red flash and blue stripe on the sole are so comfortable that I might just be choosing my outfits just to be able to wear them.  For a little romance I will add this cute new bikini from JCrew to my admittedly very large swimwear collection.  The red rickrack trim gives the crop top a sex kitten beach blanket bingo vibe - how American is that?  And the JCrew Beach Bum envelope pouch sums up my vacation dreams perfectly and it has stripes - enough said.

This new style of denim shorts by McGuire available at ShopBop.com is higher cut with a waist cinching tie and a cuff at the bottom which gives it a more fashion-forward look than frayed cut-offs.  I’ll be wearing these all summer with cropped tops, t-shirts, and even little blouses.  Nothing says summer like straw accessories and this Madewell sunhat has a bandana band that gives it that stateside feeling and is packable, which means it is going everywhere with me, all summer long.

Whatever your plans are to celebrate the Fourth I hope you have fun and fireworks!
