Spring Shopping: Creating a Sunglass Wardrobe

I always love new sunglasses for spring and summer, and now that spring is almost (!) here, in my optimism I am seeking out the best designer trends to see what will actually work in real life.  A lot of the new designs are just Insta-bait and are not at all wearable in real life without garnering gasps everywhere you go, so sticking to styles that are fun while functional is my number one goal.  A lot of celebrities have jumped on the 80’s MTV styles with sharp angles and bling that really only looked good in early music videos, just to grab headlines and make a statement on social media, but that doesn’t mean it’s flattering in real life.  I want to make a statement, but not that sort of statement.  The skinny lenses of the last two years has been done and dusted, and offered little if any protection from the sun. Moving on!

Choosing new sunnies has never been this much fun, with so many new options to suit any style and mood.  Colored frames are having a big moment, breaking the typical conservative rules of what is suitable for sunglasses.  Now you can match your blue eyeshadow, your pink hair, or your nude makeup palette. No color is out of bounds and that means there is a pair for every mood and outfit.  Another style that is ultra-flattering is the large square frame in both metals and plastics, light-lensed or dark.  Talk about feminine!  My personal all-time favorite shape that suits my face the best is the cat eye, and this year’s oversized glasses with dark lenses give maximum coverage, tons of mystery, and go with any outfit, anywhere I go. This updated classic will elevate my daily style and get plenty of play year-round, going just as well with a ponytail and makeup-free face after the gym or long flight, as it will when I go for full on Hollywood with strong lip color and statement outfit.

I’ll be choosing one pair of designer glasses as an investment piece and shopping for similar styles at cheap price points to give me an updated sunglass wardrobe without the financial ouch, to give me maximum coordinating style points.  I’m taking a pass on the plastic aviators, over-sized shield, geek chic, and small round metal styles. The were designed to look sensational on the runway and in editorials, but not to make anyone look gorgeous in real life.
Bring on the sun!
