Freedom '90 - A Vogue '16 Tribute! 11 Supermodels for our Model Crush Monday!

Vogue one-upped itself this past week paying tribute to George Michael's famous Freedom '90 video with not five, but eleven gorgeous supermodels, showcasing the New York collections for Spring 2017 all over the streets of NYC in an epic lip-sync that has us singing and strutting right along with it!  Face This pays its own tribute to these amazing beauties and to Vogue for bringing some attitude, glamour and fresh energy to Fashion Week in and fun new way for our Model Crush Monday!

The new video makes me nostalgic for the original with Cindy, Linda, Naomi, Christy and Tatjana - the model icons of the 90's - so now I am looping both clips and lip-syncing right along in my own supermodel moment - even if it is only in my own bedroom!

Multiple appearances as opening and closing model in the top shows including Chanel, during international fashion weeks:  check.

Regular editorials and covers worldwide:  check.

Supermodel status:  confirmed.

Kendall Jenner is everywhere in the media and has been for many years, but as a certified supermodel for a mere two years.  With 18 million Twitter followers and 65.4 million on Instagram, Kendall is in a league all her own, raking in more influence than the very fashion and beauty brands she promotes.

Digging her heels in at her family’s first attempts to start her on a modeling career, Kendall was shy and awkward, making her pretty much like every other teenage girl.  Only this teenage girl grew up in the eye of the media with the eyes of the world watching her every move.  Having the perfect girl squad of Gig Hadid, Cara Delevigne, and Hailey Baldwin, all realizing their own dreams of modeling and acting gave her the confidence to own her potential.  While we would almost expect doors to fly open and great exceptions to be made in facilitating Kendall’s career, the opposite turns out the be the reality.  Kendall is known for being fastidiously professional, punctual, without attitude, and for having high expectations for herself, earning her modeling accolades on merit, not connections.  Recently ranked as the third highest paid model by Forbes Magazine, it is a pretty sure bet that we'll see those long legs and big brown eyes for years to come.  If anyone was positioned to change the interaction between the fashion industry, modeling, and the media, it’s Kendall, rewriting the rules as she goes.  All the way to the top.

Model Crush Monday - Kaia Gerber!

In the ultimate throw-back ever, legendary supermodel Cindy Crawford’s fifteen year old daughter Kaia Gerber, gives all Cindy fans a "round two" as she skyrockets into the modeling world, landing squarely at IMG and into the pages of Vogue.  The resemblance is uncanny and it seems the only thing missing is Cindy’s famous mole.  Kaia’s breakout into the modeling comes at the perfect moment as fashion is currently revisiting the early 90’s, when her mom was THE model of the moment. 

Appearing in a Versace ad campaign at age ten set the wheels in motion putting Kaia squarely on the industry’s radar.  Since then she has appeared on the cover and in an editorial feature of Vogue Paris with her mom photographed by Mario Testino, in the new fashion film for Miu Miu Eyewear, as a part of Alexander Wang’s girl squad, in the recent campaign for Chrome Hearts, not to mention a feature in Teen Vogue, and the covers of Pop, and Love magazines.  She has just been awarded “The Breakthrough Model of the Year” by The Daily Front Row and will be honored during Fashion Week this September.

The similarities to her mom are obvious on the outside but perhaps even more on the inside.  Ciindy is known as being the consummate professional, with a strong work ethic: always on time, always courteous, always kind, and always delivers, and she has instilled the same ideals in her daughter.  Kaia is confident and comfortable in front of the camera without any teenage awkwardness, qualities which her mom has said she did not have when she first started modeling as a teenager.  

Up next is an appearance in Lifetime TV’s Sister Cities, where she makes her acting debut.  I have the feeling we will be watching Kaia for years to come, as she carries on the world’s love for all things Cindy, and becomes a supermodel in her own right.  She isn’t just Cindy 2.0!  She KAIA, thank you very much!

Model Crush Monday - Supermodel Doutzen Kroes

Dutch supermodel Doutzen Kroes has been a fixture on international magazine covers for almost ten years, five of those as a beauty ambassador for L’Oreal, a Victoria Secret Angel, not to mention the face of many fashion campaigns including Mugler, Gucci, Versace, Valentino, Calvin Klein and Tiffany.

Doutzen is an avid athlete, having grown up speed skating and cycling in her hometown in northern Holland.  After being raised in a household that emphasized health and fitness over fashion, Doutzen had never even heard of Victoria’s Secret when she first landed in NY as an eighteen-year-old model, and booked her first appearance in the catalogue.  Known for her physique as much as for her beauty, Doutzen is perfectly suited to her campaign work for L’Oreal, appearing in ads for makeup and hair.

Now a mom of two, Doutzen is pursuing an acting career and charitable work for HIV and AIDS awareness, education, and prevention in kids and youth.  How many models can claim their own wax figure in Madame Tussaud’s?  This one can!  Let’s hope Doutzen doesn’t tire of being in the spotlight for a long time to come, while balancing motherhood – yummy-mommy alert! – philanthropy, and a meteoric career.  4.4 million followers on Instagram and counting!  @doutzen

Adriana Lima - Model Crush Monday!

Bringing it back to Brazil this week as we continue our crushes on the Brazilian bombshells ... this week’s supermodel is the stunning Adriana Lima!  We have seen those eyes and that body for twenty years now and no one is getting tired of it or moving on to the next.  35 year old Adriana has become an icon in her time, having walked hundreds of designer runways, appeared in countless campaigns world-wide, and for dozens of international magazine covers.  Adriana has been the spokesperson for Maybelline Cosmetics for seven years and a Victoria’s Secret Angel since 2000 - their longest reigning Angel to date.  

Adriana has as many guy fans as she does women, and for good reason: she is a girls’ girl who inspires women to work out harder and to embrace their inner goddess, all while appearing in record breaking issues of Esquire and GQ.  She has even appeared twice in the legendary Pirelli Calendar, one of those times pregnant.  Her Superbowl ads for Victoria’s Secret, Kia, and Teleflora ranked at the top for number of viewers, with Adriana being the first celebrity to appear in two Superbowl ads in the same year.  

Adriana carried the Olympic torch in Rio, tearing up with pride and exclaiming to the world what an honor is was to be a part of such an epic time in Brazil.   Hosting TV segments along with fellow Angel Alessandra Ambrosio and Ryan Seacrest have kept her front and center these past two weeks, and we can’t get enough of her laugh and flirty nature! 

Adriana has femininity with an edge, eyes to dream about, and an exotic mix that makes us wish we were Brazilian!  Maybe if we work out more, learn to make cat eyes, and practice how to work our curves, all while channeling our inner-carioca…..

Gisele Bundchen - Model Crush Monday!

Brazil is hot on everyone’s radar and not only because of the Rio Olympics.  Over a dozen of the world’s top supermodels have come out of Brazil in the last twenty years, which far exceeds any other nation!  And topping that enviable list is the iconic Gisele Bundchen, who Forbes Magazine declared the top earning model of 2015, at 44 million dollars, and with an overall worth of over 300 million.  

At thirty five years old, Gisele has been at the top of the modeling industry for over twenty-one years.  Now married to Patriot’s quarterback Tom Brady, she is mom to two kids, and going as strong as ever, releasing a giant tome of a book published by Taschen this year aptly called “Gisele”, chronicling her career and showcasing her work with the best photographers of the last two decades, including Mario Testino, Helmut Newton, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, David Sims, and Patrick Demarchelier, who was the first photographer to notice she had something special at age sixteen, when he shot her on location for Harper’s Bazaar.

When Gisele began modeling she was regularly criticized for having a big nose and small eyes, but she was so focused and determined that she decided she would be the most professional, punctual, cheerful model on set, and right away  people started to take notice of her for her strong work ethic.  Even fashion design house Missoni ran an ad they had shot with her with Mario Testino, where her hair was blowing over her face, so as to disguise her nose.  But no one could deny that million-dollar body for long and in short order she was at the pinnacle of the modeling and fashion world, with rarely a break, even when she was pregnant.  Strong work ethic indeed!

Stella Maxwell - Model Crush Monday !

It’s been a steamy summer so it’s appropriate that our Model Crush Monday this week is the smoking hot bombshell Stella Maxwell.

Truly an international beauty, 26 year old Stella Maxwell was born in Belgium to Northern Irish Diplomat parents, and raised in Belgium, Australia and New Zealand, now calling NYC and LA home.  

2015 and 2016 have been banner years for Stella, winning her wings as a Victoria Secret Angel, and being named the #1 Hottest Woman by Maxim Magazine.  Not bad for a girl who calls herself a late bloomer!  She has walked the runways of Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Fendi and Balmain to name just a few, and shot editorials for several international editions of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Numero, Purple, and Glamour Magazines.  

Modeling is a stepping-stone for Stella who is recording her first album in hopes of a music career.  Rising to the top so quickly in the modeling world certainly won’t hurt her chances of staying in the limelight for a long time to come!

Cayley King - Future Supermodel and Our Model Crush Monday!

Mid-west American beauty Cayley King is exploding on to the modeling scene and on her way to becoming one of America’s future supermodels.  Two years ago at age 16 her Dad emailed pictures of Cayley to Ford Models Chicago’s website and before she knew it, she was on her way traveling to NYC, Europe, and Asia.

Cayley has walked for Versace where she admitted the high heels were a major challenge, but she is sure to get tons of practice in the coming seasons.  She is quickly racking up credits in the top magazines like V Magazine, Interview, i-D, British Vogue, Bazaar Germany, Vogue Italia, Surf Magazine and Elle Kazakhsta, and has shot campaigns for Sass & Bide, Forever 21 and Carolina Sarria.

Cayley recently broke away from the pack of commercial blonde haired models by shaving part of her hair off, which immediately gave her an amazing editorial look with a touch of androgyny. Going from a fresh-faced teen to a striking editorial model with international appeal has changed the trajectory of her career. Remember her name – I predict an all-American supermodel on the horizon.
