#nomakeupmovement - Dare to Bare! Stars Go Makeup-free in THE New Beauty Trend

Maybe it is a backlash against all the extreme makeup selfies on Instagram, or the obviously retouched faces on magazine covers and in editorials, or maybe it is just that the trend pendulum is swinging in the opposite direction, but whatever the reason, makeup-free faces are having a moment – a BIG moment.  And it is about time.  Celebrities who are comfortable in their own skin are posting gorgeous and realistic selfies sans makeup and the look is nothing short of revolutionary and refreshing on the eye.  This could end up to be just another trend, but it is a good one to embrace, and so much less expensive and time-consuming than trying to imitate extreme contouring, dramatically drawn eyebrows, heavy eyeliner, and cadaver-colored lips.  What a relief!

The controversy around the no-makeup trend is echoing all over twitter with one side saying that it is authentic and freeing for women, and the other side saying that whether you want to wear a lot of makeup or go bare faced should be a choice and not a trend.  Both arguments are valid and it should not be a divisive issue – aren’t there enough issues to divide people than whether someone chooses to wear makeup or not??

Showing skin, wrinkles, freckles, discolorations and all does not take anything away from the beauty of these celebrities and models.  In fact, it shows how remarkably beautiful they really are, without clown-like embellishment and alteration of their features.  It’s time our eye became attuned once again to what women really look like and to celebrate the unique beauty of each one of us.  Copying extreme makeup looks makes women look like clones and there is nothing beautiful about these false appearances.  Who wants to look like a clone? Celebrities did not become famous for being like anyone else – they are unique, and they stand out from the pack for those very qualities.

This new beauty trend is gaining momentum and is not going to go away any time soon, so get on board and enjoy the freedom of being yourself, time to time.  Take care of your skin and groom your brows, and start taking selfies to see what is your own best lighting condition, and then post the best shot. I dare you! Let everyone know how GORGEOUS you really are, no filters needed!

Winter Skin Beauty Hacks: Keep Glowing While It’s Snowing

Looking a little too red and rosy?  Is your skin feeling like it might crack if you smile?  Lips looking a little like a dried up desert?  If you are still using your same beauty products in the winter that you use the rest of the year, you might be causing a lot of these issues yourself.  Our skin has vastly different needs in the winter in reaction to the environment: drying indoor heating, going from very cold air to very warm air, biting winds, and lots of layers piled up around our faces makes our skin vulnerable and in need of a little extra TLC.  Switching to products that help your skin retain moisture and don’t strip the skin is critical and will help you keep glowing all winter long.

Like every beauty routine you have to start with the basics.  Wash your face with a creamy product that moisturizes as is removes makeup and impurities, and is less harsh than regular cleansers on the skin.  Twice a week exfoliate your skin with a gentle scrub to remove dry skin.

Apply moisturizer while your face is still damp as it will lock in moisture and plump up the skin.  Look for moisturizers that contain ceramides, peptides, and hyaluronic acid all of which help retain skins moisture levels and help create a strong barrier against the elements.

A little skin treat that goes a long way is a face mask and this is the perfect time to indulge.  Apply a face mask while you soak in the bath so that your pores open up making the mask much more effective.  For a list of masks and the skin issues they treat see my post The Face This Ultimate Guide to Face Masques.  You can also raid your pantry for natural alternative masks.  Masks are a great way to combat redness, to give your skin an extra boost of hydration, to exfoliate away dry skin and to get glowing.

Just because the days are shorter and we are much more covered up does not mean you can skip a high SPF.  Protect your skin from UVA/UVB rays that still make it through winter skies, and light that reflects off of snow.  And don’t forget your lips – the skin on lips is often the first part of the face to show signs of winter stress, as we constantly lick our lips because of drying wind or indoor heating, so be sure to use a basic scent-free lip butter at night (lip products with a flavor or fragrance can be more drying), and use a creamy lip product or tinted lip balm with SPF during the day.

Simply switching up the products you use can make a huge difference to your winter skin and banish a lot of skin troubles away.  Being consistent is important to keep you glowing like it is spring, and less like a certain red-nosed reindeer.  And don’t forget to hydrate from the inside by drinking lots of H20 to replenish the moisture in your skin, keeping it plump. Just because it is winter does not mean you have to forgo the glow.

Model Crush Monday: Victoria’s Secret Angel Elsa Hosk

Swedish beauty Elsa Hosk is about the walk the runway for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, 2016, for the sixth time, her second show as an Angel, making her one of a select few under contract to Victoria’s Secret.  Known for her enviable curves and icy beauty, she is quickly becoming one of the iconic faces of the brand.

She began modeling at age 13 when her dad submitted photos of her to a local agency.  Her career took an upward turn when she was photographed by Ellen Von Unwerth for Guess!, a brand whose epic campaigns have made household names out of their previous models.

An athlete at heart, Elsa played professional basketball in Sweden for two years before her career took her to NYC.  To keep in peak physical condition is a year-round commitment for her, training regularly at boxing, basketball, and her favorite body-transforming workout, barre.  Clearly it’s working!

Loves:  being naked.  Hates: traveling alone on planes.

Wide-set blue eyes and a smattering of freckles, Elsa is a quintessential Scandinavian beauty, with a face that harkens back to movie stars of another era and a body that reminds us the amazon models of the eighties.  Her classic beauty has made her a natural for brands from Dior to Dolce et Gabana, Ungaro to Lilly Pulizter.

Photo Op! The FACE THIS Guide to the Best Instagram Style and Beauty for Winter

It’s that time of year again when everything you wear, every pumpkin spice latte, every holiday dĂ©cor, and every makeup look becomes an “insta-moment” begging for the perfect photo.  If you want this year’s photos to one-up last year’s pics then it is time for an update.  Here is the Face This guide to the top beauty and fashion looks that will garner lots of likes and not have you stressing out rather than enjoying the holidays.  Consider this your cheat sheet shortcut to Instagram-worthy style.

Makeup:  last year was all about contour, sharp-edged eyebrows, and ombrĂ© lips.  If you don’t want to be called out as an “Insta-victim” embrace a more natural look, using “non-touring”, soft full eyebrows, blended eyeliner, and choose either a smoky eye or deep berry-toned lip, but not both.  Leave the harsh edged lines and unnatural skin tone to last year’s feed and let your own authentic beauty and uniqueness shine through.  No more clones – or clowns.  The holidays are too busy for a 10 step, time-consuming beauty routine.

Hair:  the biggest hair crime of the holidays is spending too much time one it when you could be doing one million other things.  Make sure you have your hair cut and colored in advance so there is no last minute panic.  Commit to easy styles that aren’t trendy so that you look like the best version of yourself and not some trend-aholic.  You don’t want to look back in years to come and be horrified by your hairstyle.  Instagram is just that – instant gratification, but these photos are your life and are today’s photo album, so err on the side of classic great taste and veer away from the trendy - your future-self with thank you. Unfussy buns, loose braids, sleek ponytails, and side parts with touchable hair that moves is romantic, chic, and most of all easy to achieve.  For a little something extra, try hair embellishments for some sparkle and drama.

Party Style: Choose one amazing color to stand out and feel festive, ground it with black, and add well-placed bling that doesn’t compete with the holiday lights.  A sexy, fitted sheath dress in deep red with a jeweled neckline means you don’t have to look for the perfect necklace.  If jeans are your uniform, no need to leave your comfort zone to dress for the festivities.  Look for jeans that are embellished with rhinestones, pair with a silky shoulder-baring blouse and sequined pumps and you will be the envy of everyone who overdressed and can’t eat or move – and what’s the point of a holiday party if you can’t enjoy yourself??

Baby, it’s cold outside!  No need to bulk up to be warm and cozy on the weekends.  Skinny jeans in over-the-knee suede boots, chunky striped sweaters, and cashmere scarves won’t have you drowning enormous layers.  When the temperature dips throw on a great parka in a neutral color over top and pop on a beanie.  You don’t hibernate all winter, so neither should your sense of style!

You better WORK! You work hard and so should your accessories. Investment pieces like classic watches and handbags go the distance all year round and are instagram gold.  This year scarves are a fresh addition and can give a chic update to any outfit.  Worn on the wrist, tied to purse handles, as a neck scarf or pocket square, they are luxurious and feminine and beg for a photo.  Embellishments elevate the classic sweatshirt to profession level and are just about the most comfortable item to wear to work.  Athleisure wear hits the boardroom - that’s a trend that can hang around, thank you very much!

Follow these style and beauty tips and be Instagram-ready for all your photo ops - no Instagram regrets this year!
