Hair Loss from Covid 19 - Why and What can I do?

Could your hair loss be due to Covid 19? Or even the stress of the pandemic? It could be both according to experts in the field.

Many Covid survivors are reporting hair loss. The cause is likely not Covid itself but the high fevers it produces. Fevers are known to cause hair loss and many sick with this virus experience days of spiking fevers. Psychological stress is also linked to hair loss.

With a worldwide pandemic I'm sure many of us are experiencing this type of stress even if we've been able to avoid Covid itself, so I want to let you know a little bit more about the science behind it.

The medical name for this type of hair shedding is called telogen effluvium. And this type of hair loss or shedding will usually appear 2-3 months after the triggering event.

  • There are different phases of hair growth. Around 85-90% of the strands on your head are actively growing at any given time - this is called the anagen phase. The other 10-15% of hairs are in a resting or telogen phase.

  • Growing hair usually stays in this anagen phase for 2-3 years before entering into the telogen phase for about 2-4 months. Then it falls out and is replaced by a new hair. It's common for the every day person to lose 50-100 hairs per day, but in the case of telogen effluvium you could see hair being lost in clumps with an average of at least 300 hairs a day falling out.

  • When a person with telogen effluvium, again caused by some outside factor like fever or triggering stress event, the shock will push more hair into this telegenic phase and up to 30% of your hair will stop growing, going into the telogen resting phase before falling out 2-3 months later.

The good news is that this is usually temporary and your hair will grow back within the next year. In the short term, considering adding temporary non-damaging extensions to help with volume and length. Try Hidden Crown's halo human hair extension which is attached with a single filament and literally takes only a minute to put on or take off without causing more hair to fall out because of tape or glue or damage.
