Tips for Walking the Runway! Fashion Week 2015
This past weekend I was asked to walk for Yas Couture at Phoenix Fashion Week.
Arrival at 2p - Show at 10p
Yes, 8 hours of hair, makeup and fittings for this one single look. This is the life of a model.
One of my friends commented that the stage looks really slippery and the shoes look very high - a combination that is a little scary for most. Add to that a very tight and heavy dress ... obviously the time to pull out all the model tricks for a flawless show.
I can tell you that you can practice your walk all day long but the real secret ... is in the shoes.
____________________________________________________________
- Choose a size smaller and/or add the shoe insets that tighten the fit so you won't step out of one on stage
- Scuff up the bottom of your shoes and before going on stage spray hair spray on the soles for holding power.
- When walking you plant securely each step at the ball of your foot. One foot directly in front of the other like walking a straight line.

Best Halo Type Extensions Review Comparison - Model's cheat for Good Hair!
Modeling requires good hair!
The secret ... Hidden Crown Extensions.
So many models, actresses and celebrities wear hair extensions, and the reason I love Hidden Crown Hair Extensions is because they go in less than a minute and do not damage your hair because there are no clips, no glue and no tape. The weight of your own hair pulled over top keeps them securely in place.
Not only are these extensions by far the easiest to use ... they are the safest and per gram the least expensive. 100% real REMY human hair. Plus they are double drawn ... very Few companies offer this type of hair! It means that the hair is as thick at the top as it is at the ends. Hair as it grows gets thinner at the ends, but when wearing extensions you want the fullest and thickest hair possible. Hidden Crown is it and I wear mine for all my modeling shoots like this picture above. Color #2, darkest brown.
Long. Longer. Longest
12 inch, 16 inch, 20 inch Hidden Crown Hair
Color #60 - platinum blonde

My favorite NEW drugstore beauty products of 2015 - All under $10
A Big thank you to Destry Jetton and Arizona Midday for inviting me on the show today to talk about my favorite subject .... BEAUTY and my favorite new product launches of 2015 for under $10 that you can find at your local CVS, Walmart and Target stores.
- Simple Micellar Water.
A magnet for dirt and oil that literally grabs all the gunk from your pores. This is both a cleanser and make up remover. No water needed. Perfect for travel or the LAZIEST of us all to keep your skin clean and makeup free.
- Maybelline Master Prime Primer.
An under make up, make up that is tinted green to correct any redness. Green is opposite Red on the color wheel, so by starting your makeup routine with this product, it will counteract any red you might have on your face from acne prone skin or breakouts - allowing you to use less foundation to cover up. Perfect for flawless blur and Redness Control.
- Sally Hansen Miracle Gel.
The hottest trending nail polish that will give you that gel manicure technology at home without any Lights to activate it. We love gel manicures because they last a long time, but they are expensive, time consuming and a pain to get off requiring another trip to the salon. Miracle Gel is a 2 step process - polish and top coat and can be removed with standard nail polish remover. Genius!
- Gillette Venus Swirl Razor.
A new roller ball design to adjust to the contours of a women's body - knobby knees, ankles and all. Love.
- Dove Dry Spray Deodorant.
One my new favorite products! Goes on dry without ANY residue. Truly a find.
- John Frieda Beach Blonde Sea Wave Spray.
Back from the beauty graveyard this spray gives all hair types, soft and flexible beach waves, without any crunch! A cult favorite that is on shelves again now.
- Biore Pore Penetrating Charcoal Bar.
Charcoal is one of the hottest new ingredients making headlines in the beauty world and for a good reason. It is a natural deep cleaner for pores - able to attract dirt and oil like a magnet when it comes into contact with the carbon. A perfect bar to leave in your shower dish.

DIY natural beauty recipes for beautiful Skin!
A big thank you to Arizona Midday in Phoenix for asking me to share some of my favorite and best beauty recipes last week on the show! Here is the segment video and the directions to make in case you missed it.
Natural DIY beauty is great because not only will you save tons of money, but you will know exactly what you're putting on your skin! Completely green, here are some of my favorite and easiest recipes that really work!
DIY Toner
This recipe is especially wonderful for oily or acne prone skin. Apple cider vinegar will not only help regulate the pH in your skin but it is also has anti bacterial and anti inflammatory properties which helps with reducing redness. Apple Cider Vinegar can be a bit strong on it's own so it is best to dilute it with either filtered water or some brewed green tea.
For acne prone or oily skin use a 1:1 ratio, for normal to dry skin add more water.
DIY Cleanser
This DIY trick is a perfect way to get rid of blackheads naturally. Let's face it, no matter what your age blackheads continue to be a problem. Contrary to popular belief, blackheads are not really dirt. What happens is that the dead skin cells and sebum (oil) produced from your skin combine and get stuck in a hair follicle. Oxidation from exposure to air makes it appear dark but it's not really dirt at all.
Mix a few Tablespoons of baking soda with water or lemon juice to form a paste. Let it sit on your skin for 10 to 15 minutes (no longer or it can irritate your skin) and rinse with warm water.
Chlorine Neutralizer
I don't know about you, but I hate the way my skin smells and feels after getting out of the pool or hot tub. An easy fix is to mix 1 teaspoon of Vitamin C crystals with a pint of distilled water. You can buy Vitamin C crystal at Trader Joe's for just $9.99. Put the solution in a spray bottle and use it on your skin rubbing it in with your bare hands. This spray also works great if you happen to get a sunburn because the Vit C will help stop the pain from a burn.
Oil for Makeup Removal
Oils are the best products to use for make up removal, especially stubborn eye makeup. The science behind this principal comes from chemistry. "Like Dissolves Like" . Most of our makeup contains oil and so using oils will naturally dissolve the dirt or makeup from your skin without the need for harsh chemicals and it will remove mascara and eyeliner quite easily.
The key is in combining olive oil with castor oil, although you could use either separately, the castor oil is anti bacterial. If you skin is more oily use more castor oil and if you skin is drier use more olive oil, otherwise a 1:1 ratio
Anti-Aging Serum
These products can cost over $100 but this is treatment that you can make yourself using resveratrol. Resveratrol is an anti oxidant that will stop free radical damage that causes aging. It is an ingredient that is found in the skin of red grapes and is readily available in a liquid form at stores like Whole Foods.
Combine 1 cup mineral water (like Perrier) and 2 teaspoons or droppers full of liquid resveratrol
Add 4 Tablespoons of grape seed oil and 1 Tablespoon of Glycerin
In addition use 8 drops of your favorite essential oil (rosemary, lavender, peppermint ...)
Pour into a spray bottle and shake vigorously. Spritz Away for Younger looking Skin!
Moroccan Oil
Many women are in love with this brand of hair treatment because MoroccanOil conditions your hair without leaving it greasy. This is made with Argan Oil which comes from the Argan Tree found in Morocco. You can purchase 100% Argan Oil and put it in a spray bottle and it will work just the same plus be free of chemicals and silicone. However, it will cost just as much so not a bargain DIY tip!

The Kylie Jenner Challenge - DIY bigger lips with no surgery The SAFE way.
In the pursuit of celebrity enhanced beauty, teens everywhere have been following a trendy "challenge" by enhancing their lips in a natural, but painfully and potentially harmful way. This dare has become viral, so much so that it has it's own hashtag #KylieJennerChallenge, however it's leaving many with "Buyer's Remorse". Although there is a safer way to achieve this natural lip augmentation
- read down the page for my recommendation because this trick really does work.
Kylie Jenner Then and Now
Even though the reality star claims she has never had plastic surgery one thing is for certain - she was not born with the lips we see her in today.
Kylie: 2009 WireImage vs 2015 Instagram photo
Even though the reality star claims she has never had plastic surgery one thing is for certain - she was not born with the lips we see her in today.
Kylie: 2009 WireImage vs 2015 Instagram photo
The now 17 year old Kylie Jenner has denied that she has had any plastic surgery and claims that she creates a fuller looking lip by over drawing with her lip liner - as a model I know that over-lining will give the illusion of bigger lips, but not this much. Since Jenner herself has not laid claim to using this popular "challenge" technique we can only guess that injectable filler has been used to create her pout. Teens everywhere, in pursuit of the no surgery DIY Kylie lip are shocked with the very real results. The Challenge itself takes less than a minute but the effects can last up to a week and according to some dermatologists ... not without potential long term damage. Here's how it works.
1. Take a shot glass, or plastic cup (even a Pringles can)
2. Put on top of your mouth and suck in
A SAFER WAY:
As a beauty expert I talked about this phenomenon a couple of years ago for Arizona Midday on nbc affiliate KPNX, and featured a lip pump that can be used safely if you follow the directions which only allows for a few seconds of suction a day to create a prettier version the Kylie lip challenge. Watch this video clip below to see more.
The Science Behind why this works
Swelling and Bruising happen because the suction created is actually breaking your blood vessels in the fragile tissue of your lips. The longer you suck the worse it is and if you have fair skin you will probably be even more sensitive.
50 Shades of Swollen
Example after example are being captured by bloggers and in social media - these type of compilations going viral with million of views. Watch this:

How to Make your Hair Extensions Last Longer.
There are 2 very important tips when it comes to taking care of your hair extensions that you probably haven't heard about, but I guarantee it is the best advice you will get if you want to make your temporary hair extensions to have a longer life!
BRUSH BRUSH BRUSH
Just like a dentist tells you to brush your teeth after eating, so will a hair extension expert explain that brushing multiple times during the day is the number one way to make sure your extensions stay untangled, silky and shiny. What happens is that when you have a lot of hair fixed on your scalp in an extension design and you move your head side-to-side it can easily get tangled. Add to that your own natural fall of of your real hair and you can end up with a mess. This is why brushing often is so important for maintenance. Try to keep a small brush in your purse and take it out every time you use the ladies room to give a quick run through your locks. [Or if you really listen to your dentist brush your hair and your teeth together every time after eating.] If your extensions are tangly start at the bottom and work your way upward while brushing down. This one step alone will make your extensions last twice as long as they would otherwise. I personally love using the Wet Brush, and their mini "Squirt" version for this purpose.
DO NOT WASH
I know it might seem gross, but washing your extension too much is one of the worst things you can do if you want them to last longer. This the on of the most mis-understood hair care advice I can give you. Hair extensions, even though made with real human hair, will not receive any natural oils from your scalp and won't need to be washed frequently, especially if you are using clip ins or my personal favorite, Hidden Crown with an invisible wire halo-design. In fact, washing them too often will dry them out. Even if you are wearing them every day, you should be able to go a couple of months without washing. If you wear your hair curly one day and want it straight the next, it's better to flat iron - not to wash it. Or jUZzz it up with a spritz of water and let it air dry before styling.
Have you tried the hottest, newest extension design on the market yet?

Enter the 2015 More Magazine Beauty Search : WOMEN with MORE Ambition, Beauty, Style and Passion!
To enter this year's 2015 contest click [HERE]
5 years ago I entered More Magazine's Beauty Search Contest and was chosen as the first ever Grand Prize Winner. It started just like this ... I saw the contest and decided to enter. What happened next?
I flew to New York City and used the money I won to self publish my book Face This: Real Advice from Real Models and began writing this blog. Winning also launched me back into the modeling world full time at age 45 with campaigns for the Four Seasons, Cover Girl and Olay. I appeared on covers of magazines and co-hosted a morning show for ABC along with becoming a nationally known beauty expert. And it all started with this single entry to a beauty search for More Magazine in 2010. I encourage you to enter !

POSING LIKE A MODEL - HOW TO TAKE GREAT PICTURES FOR THE RED CARPET - PROM - WEDDINGS - INSTAGRAM or FACEBOOK
Shelley Goodstein & Dr Kevin Pounds |
I've had my share of red carpet photo ops. Being a model certainly helps when it comes to knowing how to pose year after year. So I thought I'd share a few tricks I've learned for perfect red carpet moments. Besides sucking it in and good posture, here's how to pull off a perfect pic!
The Classic.
This is your fail safe, go-to pose. Turn to an angle, one foot in front of the other - one leg bent and one hand on the hip! This might be the absolute, most photographed pose of ALL time. Definitely flattering for any "booty"!
Kim Kardashian - photo credit: Getty image |
Cross your legs.
Yes, imagine you are in need of a bathroom and VOILA you have the super slimming forward facing pose.
Emily Ratajkowski - Photo credit : HuffingtonPost.com |
Unladylike - Legs apart.
JLow repeats this pose often and may be one of the few that can get away with it. Keep in mind this pose is only flattering from the right angle though HINT: Always know where the camera is. Your legs appear slimmer because of the space between. Point your front foot.
Jennifer Lopez - Photo credit: Grammy.com |
The BFF pose
Let's face it, life and photos are always better with your bestie by your side. Plus if you're the "smarter" friend, you'll cheat yourself a little behind to hide a little extra-whatever. This pose always works well as long as you both don't have the same "better" side!

Ketchup for Green Hair and more DIY natural Beauty Recipes that really Work!
Most blondes will tell you that they are very careful about avoiding too much pool time in the summer for fear of the "martian" effect on their locks. You might be surprised to learn that the real culprit in this is COPPER. And if you have copper pipes you might end up with that green tint as well.
Chlorine does play a part however, in that the copper in the water will be oxidized by the chlorine and causes binding of proteins to the hair shaft, turning it green.
An easy DIY at home fix? Ketchup! The tomatoes and the vinegar will neutralize this chemical reaction. Simply use ketchup on your hair, wrap with plastic or a shower cap. Leave on for 20 minutes and shampoo out.
Here are a few more inexpensive recipes to help with common hair problems that I shared yesterday with the viewers of ARIZONA Midday on Channel 12 in Phoenix using all natural ingredients you can find in the grocery store. Watch the video below.

Walk in Heels like a Supermodel - Tips from the Runway
Shelley Goodstein Dec 2014 |
I have to admit, I banned myself from runway modeling for a few years because I had a tremendous fear of falling from the sky high heels required to walk in these shows. The photo above is from a couple months ago - I guess this goes to show that I've learned a few things over the years to help me get "back on the horse."
In the words of Right Said Fred, "I'm a model if you know what I mean. And I do my little turn on the catwalk, Yeah on the catwalk!"
Some tips to walking in heels:
- Buy your sky high heels a half size too small. All my runway shoes are just a tad small. After all you're not buying stilettos for comfort anyway. This way your foot and shoe plant solidly together and there is no risk of one stepping out without the other. You know Cinderella would concur!
- Lean into your hips and push off your back foot for a long, graceful stride.
- Posture is key and this goes straight to confidence. Chin should be parallel to the ground. Shoulders back and arms should be ever so slightly bent at the elbows behind you.
- You should be walking in a straight line with one foot in front of the other -landing on the ball of your foot. Don't let your feet cross over each other.
- Practice makes perfect!!!
XOXO,
Shelley

Halo Couture vs Hidden Crown halo shaped hair extensions comparison. Which is better - the differences HERE!
I just attended the International Beauty Show (IBS) in New York City. This is where stylists and industry wholesalers go to learn about the hottest, newest and best selling products in the beauty biz! Trust me this is the place you see it all!
Attendees at the IBS show |
There are a couple companies in the US that sell this type of extension and were displaying their goods at the IBS Show - namely HaloCouture and Hidden Crown.
Both companies sell 100% human REMY hair, not synthetic. REMY HAIR is considered premium in quality because the hair cuticles are kept in tact unlike other type of extensions and created in such a way that they look completely natural!
Both HaloCouture and Hidden Crowns' halo shaped hair extensions are similar in width and both are lace backed layered wefts. One of the biggest differences outside of retail pricing (See below $$), is in the way each is fitted/attached and the amount of hair on each halo which is measured by weight (grams).
HaloCouture Closure |
Here is a photo of the way HaloCouture halo's are fitted - they use a bra like strap attached to a wire. The issue with this is that it can be bulky and irritate the scalp and if you have a small head like I do it can bunch up.
Hidden Crown fastener |
The Hidden Crown's design is much simpler - a single micro clip and knot.
RETAIL PRICING:
- HaloCouture 16 inch Original Halo, 100 grams - $350 (20 inch - $460)
- HaloCouture 16 inch Layered Halo 145 grams - $480 (20 inch - $580)
- Hidden Crown 16 inch Halo 140 grams - $249 (20 inch - $269)
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
The retail pricing for HaloCouture's original halo is over $100 more than Hidden Crown AND its' 40% LESS hair than Hidden Crown. The pricing for HaloCouture's layered halo which is just 5 grams more hair, is nearly double ($560)!
The HaloCouture layered Halo is hair that is layered within the halo design. For the $230 price difference, I would suggest taking your Hidden Crown Extension to your stylist to customize to fit your hairstyle perfectly if you want layered hair instead of thick ends. Rumor has it that Hidden Crown will be launching it's own Hidden Crown LAYERS later next month.

Winter SKINCARE - Jojoba / Hohoba oil works - even for acne prone skin
WATCH the VIDEO {HERE} |
A big thank you to Arizona Midday for inviting me back this week to share some beauty fixes with viewers on Channel 12, nbc in Phoenix.
Even in Arizona temperaturea drop, and heaters go on, and our skin dries our more quickly - looking dull and dreary. In fact, if you are experiencing tightness, or flakiness, it could be a sign that you need to upgrade your moisturizer or apply more frequently.
Moisturizers and lotions are really just emulsions of oils and water. You might be skeptical of using a straight out oil on your face or body, but this is a trend quickly becoming adopted by many beauty fanatics, and for good reason - especially when your skin is in distress.
Jojoba oil - [pronounced hohoba] - is known as an oil, but technically it is a wax ester. This is important to know because wax esters are the closest compounds to natural skin oil or sebum. When you use jojoba [hohoba] oil, your skin believes it is responsible for producing enough oil, thereby reducing it's own oil production. Good news! this is why jojoba oil is non-comedogenic even for acne prone skin! Jojoba/Hohoba oil is readily available for about $10 in health food stores and at Whole Foods.
When your skin is suffering and chapped, it can easily become inflamed which is the time you should reach for an OTC Hydrocortisone Cream before applying moisturizer. And for those deep cracks use Vaseline, oils or Aquaphor ointment.
TRICK for using: After bathing apply the petroleum jelly, oil or ointment BEFORE you dry off - they all spread super easy. Then, finish drying off with a towel. These products will create a barrier on your skin - trapping the water and forcing the hydration back into your skin and protecting it from losing moisture because of evaporation.

Hung over. Beauty Fixes for a late night.
Today you may be thinking that ringing in 2015 may have been better without that fourth glass of champagne. Here are some quick easy tips to looking your best today after a fun night of toasting to the New Year!
1. Hydrate. Duh...
We all know that drinking water first thing when you get up in the morning can kick start your internal organs and help your skin glow. However, there is new research that links drinking 8 glasses as soon as you rise (a traditional Ayurvedic treatment) and waiting an hour before eating anything, with positive results for weight loss, cancer, asthma and other diseases. This resolution is mine for the next 30 days - to see what a difference it can make.
2. Aspirin. Not just your for your head but also to alleviate inflammation in your face. Dissolve the aspirin with a little water in your hand and use it as a mask. More on that {HERE}
3. Two coats of mascara
This will help cancel out the redness in your eyes and make them bigger. Just avoid the lower lashes which could weigh down your eye by drawing attention to any darkness underneath. Also use cold spoons that have sat in ice. underneath your eyes to reduce puffiness
4. Pop on some blush and lip gloss - preferably in pink. This will make your face look flush and healthy.
5. No shamPOO.
You spent a lot of time getting the perfect NYE do, so juzz it up with some dry shampoo to keep volume all day long without having to shampoo again. How to make your own with corn starch {HERE}
Wishing you all a beautiful 2015!
XO Shelley
