Kick Start Your New Year’s Beauty Routine with these Game-Changing Resolutions:

Happy New Year! If you are like me, you are vowing to start the new year off with a bucket list of resolutions, determined that this year you will actually stick to them no matter what.  The new year is the perfect time to get rid of makeup and skincare products that didn’t work, cosmetics that weren’t the right color, products made your skin worse, or those that are old and dusty, or dried out.  Getting into a proper routine of skincare that works for your skin type actually improves its texture and appearance , prevents fine lines and wrinkles and repairs an uneven skin tone. If your skin looks and behaves in a healthy way you will need far fewer cosmetic products to fake a glow. There are so many products and information that it is overwhelming and it can be hard to figure which products to use, and why.  I’ve broken it down into a easy to follow list with the what’s and why’s, to get you - and me - started on the right track.  Amazing skin is just a few weeks away!

Cleanser: it goes without saying that really removing all makeup, pollution, and products from our faces creates a better skin surface to properly absorb treatment products.  Look for a cleanser that hydrates the skin while removing makeup and pollutants, so that your skin is not stripped of it’s natural protective oils.  I like FARMACY Green Clean Makeup Removing Cleansing Balm which is gentle but thorough, leaving my skin clean, hydrated, and smooth.

Serum:  Serums are concentrated formulas that boost the efficacy of moisturizers.  Some protect with antioxidants, and some contain alpha-hydroxy or beta-hydroxy acids to refine skin’s texture.  There are formulas for day and for night, and are an essential step in prepping skin when worn under a moisturizer.  For day, I like Ole Henriksen Truth Serum with Vitamin C + Collagen which brightens and hydrates.  For night I use Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Night Serum, which contains 12% AHA/BHA (alpha-hydroxy and beta-hydroxy acids) which smooth skin, leaving it more radiant.

Vitamin C: Antioxidants like vitamin C protect skin from by helping to limit free radicals from sun, dust and pollution which damage it by breaking down the skin’s collagen leading to wrinkles and an uneven texture and tone.  I like Sunday Riley C.E.O.  C.+antiOXIDANT + Repair Moisturizer which contains an advanced form of vitamin C to repair and protect skin from environmental damage.

Hyaluronic Acid:  Plump skin is more youthful and resilient to wrinkles and fine lines, so maintaining the moisture level of the skin is crucial.  I have been using hyaluronic-infused products for two years and I have seen a big improvement in the fullness and “bounce” of my skin.  Hyaluronic acid also contains antioxidants which protect the skin so using it is a no-brainer game-changer. Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Cream contains 30% hyaluronic acid which improves skin’s texture, firmness, and elasticity, all of which gives skin a youthful look and feel.

Treatment Masks:  Twice-weekly treatment masks can target all sorts of skin issues from dryness, to acne, rosacea, to uneven tone and texture.  Look for masks that boost hydration, clarify skin, or treat breakouts. Bonus - ten minutes with a face mask in the evening is indulgent and makes me feel pampered, and my skin absorbs serums and moisturizers beautifully overnight, resulting in amazing skin the next day.  I love Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask with beta-hydroxy acid which evens skin-tone, reduces the size of pores, and leaves a my skin with a smooth texture.

Sunscreen: UVA and UVB rays penetrate and damage skin leaving behind discoloration and broken-down collagen, accelerating the aging process of wrinkles, and fine lines.  Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen, even on cloudy winter days, is crucial. I love NEOGEN Dermalogy Day-Light Protection Sunscreen SPF 50 which hydrates with natural extracts, and goes on more like a moisturizer than a sunscreen.  It doesn't interfere with my makeup products that I use over top of it, and it never leaves a tell-tale residue or sheen behind.

Winter Escape - Warm-Weather Vacation Mode

The holidays are finally here and I’m loving every single second of it, from the decorations, to family time, to holiday parties, catching up with friends, and of course, vacation days.  But all of this celebrating can leaves us feeling more than a little stressed out and a lot less festive.  Sometimes a girl just has to get away! So of a warm-weather vacation is in the cards, get packing! Or start dreaming about that mid-winter get-away to help you though the cold months ahead. Be inspired by the new collections to plan your vacation wardrobe.

The new Resort and Spring 2019 collections will soon hit the stores, and next year’s trends are ultra feminine, featuring lots of white, statement jewelry, loose and flowing dresses, and seventies glam style swimwear.  Look for ruffled white blouses, eyelet, and white wide-leg jeans.  Boho maxis have been a staple for years now, and the new dresses are more luxurious, silky, and flowing, in deeper tones.  Look for deep oranges, gem tones, and sophisticated florals.  Swimsuits are glamorous in 2019, with seventies details like halter necks, ties, and high cut legs.

It has been quite a year! Thank you for all your views of Face This: A Model’s Secrets! I wish you all very happy holidays and an amazing new year!
                                                         XOXO Shelley

Rescue The Perfect Pout: Banish Dry, Chapped Lips

Are your lips crying out for mercy from winter weather, faced heating, and wind?  No need to suffer another day of painful, cracked, dried out lips.  There are amazing products that can treat, heal, plump, and protect your lips from everything winter throws at them, so don’t wait another minute.  Start tonight and your lips will be luscious in twenty four hours, so that amazing deep berry lip color you got especially for all the holiday parties will go on like a dream.  For my lips the Holy Grail lip treatment product is Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask which I use every night at bedtime without fail.  This leave-on mask softens and plumps like nothing else thanks to hyaluronic acid,  moisturizes with minerals that leave my lips soft and supple, and smells deliciously of mixed berries.  I love it so much that I saved a small sample version from Sephora and keep it filled up to take with my in my handbag.   Bonus: it comes with a cute little spatula to scoop out just the right amount.

Exfoliating with treatments like Kopari Coconut Lip Scrub, and Too Faced Peach Lip Scrub, can help remove dead skin, revealing softer lips that are ready for hydrating products, balms, oils, and color.  Use two to three times per week and you will quickly see an improvement.  Healthy lips don’t crack or dry out as quickly, and the better condition your lips are in, the better your lip color will look, especially if you love matte lip products.  I love using the Refresh and Prep Lip Scrubber brush from Sephora with lip balms or oils, to exfoliate and slough off dead skin, and to improve circulation for a rosy pink glow  - goodby chapped lips! Just be sure to follow up with an ultra-hydrating balm after using it to lock in moisture. While on the go, I love the tinted Agave Lip Masks from Bite Beauty for a wash of color that livens up my winter complexion without having to use a strong lip color which I will probably lick off in minutes. I also like Winky Lux Matcha Lip Balm containing oils that hydrate and protect, and give me a hint of delicious matcha flavor at the same time.

Start tonight and you won’t need to run away from the mistletoe at the holiday party!
                                                  Hugs and kisses, Shelley XOXO

LIVING CORAL: Pantone’s Color of the Year 2019

Just when we can all use a bit of optimism and warmth, Pantone has released its Color of the Year 2019, Living Coral: “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes, and enlivens with a softer edge”.  We can all use a little life affirmation and energy in our lives, and if we can get it via a color, then bring it on!

I’ve always loved coral as it seems less aggressive than red, and not as delicate as pink.  Not to be confused with orange, it feels traditional and fresh at the same time. With winter cold bearing down on us, less daylight, and forced heating, Living Coral seems timely and just the warm up we need, making us dream of sunsets, coral reefs and beaches, vacation, and sunshine. Optimistic and energizing, yes, and enlivening, for sure.

Makeup, fashion, lifestyle products, and interior design will all start to offer this shade but there is no need to wait.  You can find coral-hued treats already that will brighten anyone’s day as a holiday gift, not to mention yours, so treat yourself!

Holiday Spirit = HolidayStress? It's Time For Luxurious Self-Care Treats

Has the season got you feeling a little less festive and a lot more stressed?  The lead-up to Christmas with the shopping lists, decorating, entertaining, traveling, all in frigid temperatures can really leave you feeling worn out and dreaming of a quiet day at home in your pajamas on the sofa, eating Christmas treats and binge-watching Netflix.  And maybe that’s exactly what you should do!  The notion of “self-care” seems counter-productive when your to-do list seems to just get longer and longer, but de-stressing and forcing yourself into a time out can recharge your batteries keeping you healthy, not to mention sane, during the holiday season.

I know I am not the only one who needs me-time and my friends are just as stressed out as I am, so I will be treating not only myself but my girls to pampering treats to warm them up, slow them down, bring some peace and tranquility, and to help them get a much-needed good night’s sleep.  Skipping a holiday spice flat white latte isn’t so hard when I am tempted with the loose teas in the David’s Tea Wellness Box especially the blend called Serenity Now, served up in my artisanal Arendelle mug from Anthropologie (the best place, by the way, to find the most beautiful selection of tea cups and coffee mugs for holiday gifts).  Scent has a strong effect on well-being and can really calm, refresh, or invigorate depending on which fragrance elements you choose.  I love Halcyon Crystal Eau De Parfum in Amethyst which is infused with peony, jasmine, rose, which slows me down and helps create a peaceful feeling.

Nothing soothes like good soak in a fragrant bath, chasing away the chill and warming you up.  Yuzo Soap Bath Bomb Cubes in Lavender Sage is so good you won’t want to get out of the tub.  Essential oils are a wonderful way to channel tranquility, to energize, and to help you sleep.  Vitruvi’s Stone Diffuser in Blush looks like a beautiful decor object and I love their Quiet Blend Essential Oil before bed to help slow down a racing mind. Pleasing all my senses, including visual.

Jo Malone’s candles are legendary and come with gorgeous packaging making them the perfect gift, but are just as lovely as a treat for yourself.  The luxurious Mimosa and Cardamom candle is a delicious winter scent with delicate golden mimosa blended with spicy cardamom, damask rose, heliotrope, earthy tonka, and sandalwood.  An indulgent way to create a calming  atmosphere.

Sleep: nothing melts away stress quite like a good night’s sleep, yet it is one of the hardest things to achieve.  I can’t count how many things I can find to start worrying about just as my head hits the pillow.  But beauty sleep is possible! Slip’s silk eye mask and pillow case in pink are sumptuous and soft, and make me feel so pampered while dozing off.  Just in case my mind takes off on a tangent, I love This Work’s Deep Sleep Pillow Spray, which I actually spray on a handkerchief so as not to mark the silk pillowcase. And it’s true - This Works!  Don’t forget your feet - Make + Model’s plush faux fur scuff slippers are so cozy and give your feet a treat.

All the pampering in the world won’t help if you don’t set aside some me-time to take care of yourself over the holidays.  It is easy to get caught up and think that you will rest up afterwards, but it is a time of giving, and that means giving to yourself too.  So don’t race to exercise or do yoga, ease off the self-imposed holiday diet, and let yourself rest and relax, and recharge. You are worth it!
