The Skincare Trend You Need to Know About: Skin Cycling

Hey gorgeous, have you heard of skin cycling? It's the latest skincare craze that's taking the beauty world by storm! If you're tired of applying the same skincare products day in and day out, then you need to give skin cycling a try. So, what exactly is skin cycling? Well, it's a skincare technique where you alternate your favorite products every few days instead of using them all at once. This gives your skin some much-needed rest days and allows the ingredients in your products to work their magic.
Dr. Whitney Bowe, a top New York City dermatologist, is credited with coining the term "skincycling." According to her, it's a great way to get a more fully rounded skincare routine. By strategically alternating your products, you can address a variety of skin concerns like dryness, acne, and uneven skin tone. But wait, there's more! Skin cycling also helps to prevent your skin from becoming too dependent on certain ingredients. Just like how your body can become resistant to antibiotics, your skin can become resistant to skincare ingredients if you use them too often. By cycling your products, you can avoid this and keep your skin looking its best. Now, you may be wondering how to get started with skin cycling. Well, it's simple! Just take a look at your current skincare routine and divide your products into categories. For example, you might have a cleanser, toner, serum, and moisturizer. Then, use each category of products for a few days at a time before switching to the next category. One important thing to keep in mind is to pay attention to your skin's reaction. If you notice any irritation or breakouts, it's a sign that a particular product might not be suitable for your skin. In that case, you might want to skip that product altogether or use it less frequently. In conclusion, skin cycling is a fantastic way to give your skin some rest days and get the most out of your favorite skincare products. So, what are you waiting for? Give it a try and see the difference for yourself! Your skin will thank you.

Until next time, stay beautiful!

XOXO
Shelley

Kick Start Your New Year’s Beauty Routine with these Game-Changing Resolutions:

Happy New Year! If you are like me, you are vowing to start the new year off with a bucket list of resolutions, determined that this year you will actually stick to them no matter what.  The new year is the perfect time to get rid of makeup and skincare products that didn’t work, cosmetics that weren’t the right color, products made your skin worse, or those that are old and dusty, or dried out.  Getting into a proper routine of skincare that works for your skin type actually improves its texture and appearance , prevents fine lines and wrinkles and repairs an uneven skin tone. If your skin looks and behaves in a healthy way you will need far fewer cosmetic products to fake a glow. There are so many products and information that it is overwhelming and it can be hard to figure which products to use, and why.  I’ve broken it down into a easy to follow list with the what’s and why’s, to get you - and me - started on the right track.  Amazing skin is just a few weeks away!

Cleanser: it goes without saying that really removing all makeup, pollution, and products from our faces creates a better skin surface to properly absorb treatment products.  Look for a cleanser that hydrates the skin while removing makeup and pollutants, so that your skin is not stripped of it’s natural protective oils.  I like FARMACY Green Clean Makeup Removing Cleansing Balm which is gentle but thorough, leaving my skin clean, hydrated, and smooth.

Serum:  Serums are concentrated formulas that boost the efficacy of moisturizers.  Some protect with antioxidants, and some contain alpha-hydroxy or beta-hydroxy acids to refine skin’s texture.  There are formulas for day and for night, and are an essential step in prepping skin when worn under a moisturizer.  For day, I like Ole Henriksen Truth Serum with Vitamin C + Collagen which brightens and hydrates.  For night I use Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Night Serum, which contains 12% AHA/BHA (alpha-hydroxy and beta-hydroxy acids) which smooth skin, leaving it more radiant.

Vitamin C: Antioxidants like vitamin C protect skin from by helping to limit free radicals from sun, dust and pollution which damage it by breaking down the skin’s collagen leading to wrinkles and an uneven texture and tone.  I like Sunday Riley C.E.O.  C.+antiOXIDANT + Repair Moisturizer which contains an advanced form of vitamin C to repair and protect skin from environmental damage.

Hyaluronic Acid:  Plump skin is more youthful and resilient to wrinkles and fine lines, so maintaining the moisture level of the skin is crucial.  I have been using hyaluronic-infused products for two years and I have seen a big improvement in the fullness and “bounce” of my skin.  Hyaluronic acid also contains antioxidants which protect the skin so using it is a no-brainer game-changer. Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Cream contains 30% hyaluronic acid which improves skin’s texture, firmness, and elasticity, all of which gives skin a youthful look and feel.

Treatment Masks:  Twice-weekly treatment masks can target all sorts of skin issues from dryness, to acne, rosacea, to uneven tone and texture.  Look for masks that boost hydration, clarify skin, or treat breakouts. Bonus - ten minutes with a face mask in the evening is indulgent and makes me feel pampered, and my skin absorbs serums and moisturizers beautifully overnight, resulting in amazing skin the next day.  I love Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask with beta-hydroxy acid which evens skin-tone, reduces the size of pores, and leaves a my skin with a smooth texture.

Sunscreen: UVA and UVB rays penetrate and damage skin leaving behind discoloration and broken-down collagen, accelerating the aging process of wrinkles, and fine lines.  Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen, even on cloudy winter days, is crucial. I love NEOGEN Dermalogy Day-Light Protection Sunscreen SPF 50 which hydrates with natural extracts, and goes on more like a moisturizer than a sunscreen.  It doesn't interfere with my makeup products that I use over top of it, and it never leaves a tell-tale residue or sheen behind.
