Why Celebrities Love Hair Extensions!

Celebrities love extensions. I think long hair is sexy and let’s face it Hollywood is all about transformations and sex appeal. Celebs can have short lobs one day and long, luxurious hair the next and they use hair extensions to change their look. It’s estimated that over 90% of Tinseltown’s stars wear hair extensions. No longer a big secret, hair extensions are now easily available to the everyday woman and a great way to instantly change up your look; adding length or to amp up volume.

Now more than ever it is easy to order extensions online and do it yourself at home.

Some tips to getting it right:

  • It’s important to remember that the roots of your hair and the ends of your hair are often different; For extensions you’ll want to match the ends of your hair because that is where your real hair will meet up with the extensions and you want that to be a seamless match.

  • When asking for a color match use natural light for a picture of your hair from top to ends. Don't use a filter or direct sunlight.

  • Make sure you are purchasing 100% Remy hair that is ethically sourced. Remy hair means all the cuticles are facing in the same direction so tangling is minimized. You can curl, flat iron and treat this hair just like your own. Hair extensions don’t expire but they will wear out from tons of washes and extreme heat styling. You can expect them to last from 3 months to over a year depending on how you care for them.

  • Trust the company you are buying from. Hair extensions are not a regulated industry - you want to make sure you are getting what you are paying for and not any synthetic hair mixed in.

  • Many people start off with clip in or halo style extensions. They are the easiest and least damaging since they are temporary methods that you can put on for a special event or use every day. My advice is to choose clip ins that are less pieces since each piece has clips that you need to hide on your scalp. My favorite are the halo headband style extensions.

Celeb-Fav Snakeskin Prints Are This Year's Top Animal Print

Take a cue from celebrities like Gigi Hadid and Rihanna and add snakeskin to your wardrobe for an on-trend while extremely classic spin on animal prints.  Both snakeskin and snakeskin-printed leather give outfits a sophisticated edge and might just become your favorite style pieces.  Go full-on and wear multiple pieces at once a la Rihanna, or take a subtle approach with an accent piece such as a wristlet or belt.  Everyone’s wardrobe should have a snakeskin boot, and I am having difficulty in choosing between a high boot, stiletto-heeled ankle bootie, or Chelsea boot.  I know I would get lots of outfit mileage out of all three! Choices, choices.  I also plan to pair printed jeans and pants with solid-colored sweaters and blouses as snakeskin really pops against all different shades and tones, just as easily as with neutrals like black, grey, or ivory.  There are lost of vegan leather and faux leather options available as well, and snake prints are appearing on everything from workout wear to lingerie, knits, and silks.  Bonus: these pieces will be just as on-trend for years to come as they are today.

The Business of Modeling: Money, Money, Money

“Coco Rocha, a model who has a management and ownership stake in Nomad Mgmt Modeling Agency and has served as brand director, works with models to help them develop strategies for their careers. She spoke to WWD about the lack of financial transparency in the modeling industry.

The bottom line? Models needs to read their contracts carefully and take the time to understand what they are signing.”  Lisa Lockwood, WWD

The business of modeling is just that: a business.  Supermodel Coco Rocha has evolved her career into sharing her expertise with new models both in front of the camera and on the business side of a model’s career. Her Coco Rocha Model Camp not only teaches models how to pose and model creatively, she also shares her knowledge of the enormous role social media now plays in a modeling today, and how to treat a modeling career as a business.  Agencies all over the world have had decades of developing a system by which a model is never fully aware of her earnings, debts to the agency for expenses, claimable taxes, or what the model’s rights and responsibilities truly are.  It is intentional and often models are made to feel that it will affect their work prospects if they ask for clear accounting on a regular basis, and in most cases the only explanation of accounting is in the initial contract a model signs when they agree to representation by an agency.  The onus falls on the model, often a teenager, to either agree to how the system operates, or to step back and reconsider working with the agency.  It isn’t right and without the industry taking a strong stand on clear accounting practices, it is up to the model to be informed, educated, and where possible well-advised by an independent accountant or lawyer. Getting paid for work and having receipts for expenses is tougher than you think in modeling, not to mention having everything needed for tax preparation.  No one, including legendary supermodels has escaped this complicated system unscathed, and Coco is seeking to inform models by explaining how it currently works and how to protect themselves as best they can.  In many cases agencies are not the cause of a delay in payment but a client that has not paid the agency.  Agencies bill on behalf of the model and often spend time and resources chasing payment themselves.  Of course this delay is past along to the model. Modeling is a business and being just a beautiful, talented model in front of the camera isn’t enough. Coco answers questions about financial responsibility, both on the side of the agent and model, and gives advice for managing this aspect of a model's career in her interview with Lisa Lockwood for WWD:

The Top 10 Brow Products For 2019

Eyebrows are in big time. The bigger the better, but rather than eyebrows that give an expression of shock and horror (the 80’s brows brushed straight upwards), this year’s brows are full while still controlled.  I have a friend with alopecia areata and her eyebrows are almost non-existent, which is hard for her since she always had the most amazing brows, dark, full, with a natural arch.  She has become an expert in brow products and has shared a list of her current fav’s and why she likes each product.

“There are shades to match most hair colors so choose a good match as anything else will stand out and be obvious.  Take your time and be precise - this is not the part of your makeup routine where you want to rush.  Use a cotton swab with makeup remover to clean up edges if necessary.  Choose the right product for the results you want, such as a natural look versus a more defined and dramatic brow look.  Use a clean spooley brush before applying any product to get the hairs going in the direction you want, and then after you use products if you need to tidy them up.  Look for a product that has staying power so it doesn’t rub or sweat off during the day, and bring along your favorite product for touch-ups if needed.”

Clear Gel: Givenchy Mister Brow Fix Mascara in Transparent:  the curved wand brush reaches all the hairs evenly.  The clear gel formula locks the hairs into place without any sticky residue.

Sculpt: Covergirl Easy Breezy Brow Sculpt + Set Pomade:  use the angled brush to apply the pomade along your brows for definition and drama.

Waterproof: Stila All Day Waterproof Brow Color:  easily apply color using its fine tip marker. The waterproof formula won’t budge until you remove it.

Quick Fix: Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Definer:  the angled-tipped pencil outlines and fills in brows.  Use the spooley brush to blend.

Fullness:  Glossier Boy Brow:  this waxy formula with color adds fullness and depth to your brows.

Nourish:  Charlotte Tilbury Legendary Brows  Eyebrow Gel:  the vitamin E enriched formula nourishes while wax holds the brows neatly in place.

Sweat-Resistant:  L’Oreal Paris Unbelieva-Brow Tinted Brow Make-Up:  use the wand to fill in brows and shape with the angled brush.  This long-wear formula is sweat-resistant and won’t transfer.

Precision:  NYX Precise Micro Pen:  use the ultra-fine tip to draw on individual hairs to fill in bald or sparse spots on your brows.

Marker Tip:  L’Oreal Paris Micro Tattoo Brow Artist:   the angled tip has four prongs that draw on individual hairs in an even pattern that won’t rub off all day.

Overall Achiever:  NYX Tinted Brow Mascara:  this versatile product tints and holds brows quickly and easily in place with a color matching tint.

Covered: This Winter’s Best Coats You’ll See Everywhere That Won’t Break The Bank

It might seem a little bit early, but it is time to start thinking about winter coats and jackets.  When the wind starts howling and the snow flying it is so tempting to just wear the warmest thing you can find, fashion be damned.  That sometimes means stealing one of my husband’s coats that is so huge I can pile loads of sweaters underneath, or trying to get away with wearing my alpine parka over a dress because it is the warmest thing I have and I hate being cold.  This year I have decided to start early and find some coats that aren’t budget busters, inspired by the runways and fashion editorials, looking for styles that are classic enough to last several years.

Sleek and sumptuous velvet:  This black velvet quilted coat is as luxurious as it looks, and will be perfect with leather pants or skirts, lace, or metallic looks for going out.

Plush faux shearling: this long faux shearling coat is equal parts classic and fresh.  It's like taking your favorite throw out for a walk. Cuddle up!

Cocooning duvet to go: what could be more indulgent than taking your warm duvet with you? It's the perfect excuse to stay in bed on the coldest of days.  I'm going for a bright color for a fashion edge that will be just as chic as it is cozy.

Luxe faux fur:  fur has a new image and it is so fake!  There are a myriad of styles and textures of faux fur coats and jackets now, and the options are limitless.  I am in love with this emerald green jewel-toned beauty that is rich and luscious. The hood is the icing on the cake.

Forever classic: you can never be wrong with a classic belted wool coat in camel.  Stars and celebrities of the past and present know the power of the winter version of a style-staple trench coat.  Pure chic. Period.

Puffed up:  an oversized puffer coat with a high neck says bring it on. This style's metallic grey color takes it up a notch making it versatile and sporty.  No need to borrow from the boy's.

I’ve always wanted to winter coat wardrobe and this year with a little planning, it is totally feasible.  This way I’ll always have the right option for whatever I am wearing, and I will be warm - actually warm.  No more freezing myself wearing an inappropriate coat just because it looks good with my outfit.  Seriously though, suffering for the sake of fashion is so yesterday.
